Plenty Star Ranch Horse Camping and Boarding

Horse Boarding In The Southern Black Hills South Dakota

Bring your horses & bring your friends.

Ride in the surrounding National Forest and Parks and enjoy the exceptional beauty of the Black Hills!

Plenty Star Ranch is located in the Southern Black Hills of South Dakota, in a peaceful and very scenic, mountainous area at an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level. Surrounded by National Forest, and located just west of Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park.

We are surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest and riding opportunities are numerous, ranging from easy to challenging, with direct access from the ranch. We will be happy to point you towards the especially beautiful and scenic, trails and overlooks.

The Mickelson Trail - 110 miles "Rails to Trails" from Deadwood to Edgemont, leads directly by the ranch, along Hwy 385.

Many people also trailer their horses short distances for day rides to Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Harney Peak, Mount Rushmore and numerous other marked trails in the Black Hills.

Wildlife, such as deer, elk, coyote, porcupine, turkey, eagle and hawk are plentiful and easy to watch, except for mountain lions, which are here, but very shy.

In Custer you can find the closest feed store, as well as veterinarians and farriers. Several good restaurants are in Pringle, Custer, Hill City and Hot Springs. The Black Hills of South Dakota are filled with tourist attractions and special events are going on all summer long.

Long Term Boarders

Full Board includes access to all facilities, as available - covered arena (60' round pen), outdoor arena, outdoor round pen, tack room and tie up areas as well as  full care (clean- up of stalls and pens, feed, salt, 12 x12 mineral block and water)

We prefer all the horses to spend the summer out on grass pasture if at all possible as long as it is not too lush and therefore too high in protein and keep them on smaller pastures with run-in shelters closer to the ranch facilities in the winter.

We provide free choice salt and mineral blocks and clean, fresh water year round. In the winter we keep the water from freezing with a tank heater, We feed mixed grass hay and about 2-4 lb whole oats and whole barley per horse on a daily basis (when on hay in winter). Additional feed, vet care and worming is the horse owners obligation.

Upon arrival, all horse owners are required to provide a current (within the last 30 days) health certificate as well as a current Coggins Certificate for each horse. New horses should have been recently wormed to keep pens and pastures parasite free.

Current fees: $ 300 plus 4% tax per month, due on the 1st of each month in advance.

Partial Board: For someone with multiple horses and the desire to provide as well as take care of them themselves (minerals, salt, grain, hay, water)
