The Archangels' Gift:
My grandmother was my first valuable teacher with regards to spiritual things and believes. She taught me to read the bible literally and not bend the truths in the book, like so many religious groups tend to do, because they so often sound too far fetched for our imagination.
One day I asked her if she believed in angels and if so, what she thought they might look like and she began to tell me a story which I remember listening to in complete awe – it still touches me to this day every time I think about it or her.
It all happened during the Second World War, but I guess I should start with some information about my grandmother fist. My family, including my grandmother is German and I grew up and lived there until 1995. During the war, Grandmother lived in the Eastern part of Germany which was later occupied by the Russians. Much later, after the war had ended and just before the wall between the two parts was closed for good, she fled over the boarder to West Germany. She took care of herself as best she could , like all the rest of the battered and displaced population and patiently waited for the return of her husband and young son, who were both soldiers as everyone else those days. Mother always told me that she must have been very brave and patient as she never wavered in her faith that, although she had had no word of either one of them for years, they would in deed return. She had experienced the first world war as a young woman, the depression of the 20ties and then the 3rd Reich and all its pitfalls.
But she also was different than most of my other family members. Since early childhood she knew long ahead of anyone else of the darkest chapter in history for Germany, knew the two wars were coming and also how they would end. But of course she could not talk about it to anyone, not even her own family, if she herself did not want to end up in a closed institution or concentration camp as so many others did with unique psychic and visionary gifts like hers. My grandmother taught me a lot about the spiritual aspects of life and when I started to ask questions about angels, one day she told me a most fascinating story which guided and helped me through many tough times just as it did help her then:
During the time when the end of the war was nearing and everyone was worried about their loved ones out in the field, she prayed every night for a sign from heaven and one night she suddenly woke up to a bright light on her bedroom wall, with an angel standing next to it, the Archangel Gabriel himself. He was all light, she said, so tall with huge wings, he filled the entire room and with the most loving voice, he told her who he was and that he had come to answer her prayers and ease her pain. He threw the picture of a map on the wall and pointed out to her where her husband was and that he was well and where her son was and that he was fine as well. Grandmother said she felt overjoyed and so immensely grateful. The next day she did not go to the nearby church where all the Fallen and Missing-in-action were listed on a daily base, as she knew in her heart and without a doubt, she would not find them on any list. From then on the angel appeared to her every night until she got word of their imprisonment as POW and later their pending release.
My grandmother had been writing her visions and predictions in a diary – unfortunately it got lost in the turmoils of the harsh years after the war - I don't know how many times I wished I could read it after I finally embraced the truth that I had inherited her gifts of vision and empathy. Still, my grandmother continued to teach me even after she passed away in her very “German”, straight forward and to-the-point way. It eventually led me to step away from my own fears and on the path to using my gifts to help others.
